Federal College Grants Can Give You a Helping Hand 

For some people, paying for a college education is more difficult than the classes themselves.  It has become prohibitively expensive for many people to go to college but if you are in financial need there may be good news; there are Federal college grants that are designed specifically for people who have financial obstacles. 

The most common Federal college grant is the Pell Grant.  Every year, millions of undergraduate college students take advantage of this money available from the government.  It is a program by the Department of Education that primarily targets families that have an income below $40,000.  Income is not the only determination, and when you fill out the application for Federal college grants you’ll provide them with financial data for your family.  From the information that you provide they will determine an Expected Family Contribution and the amount of Pell Grant money you get will be based on this and your course load. 

Getting good grades is not just about getting into a good college and finding a good job after graduation.  If you meet certain minimum academic standards there are Federal grants like the Academic Competitiveness Grants or the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant.  There is also the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant for students that demonstrate the greatest financial impairment.   

Included in the requirements for all of these grants is the stipulation that you must be receiving a Pell Grant.  The first step in applying for any of them therefore is to make sure that you fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  It may take some time to complete and you will likely have to get some information from your family.  Completing this form might be the best move you make when it comes to obtaining funds for college. 

There are plenty of ways to get money for school, and people may be lining up to offer you loans.  If you are eligible, your best option is to take advantage of whatever Federal college grants that you can.  You will not have to pay them back as long as you finish your courses.
