College Student Money Can Have Many Sources

There are many different places that you can find college student money, and it is well worth your time to figure out how to get every penny that you’re eligible for.  They come in the form of grants, scholarships and loans.  Financing an education is not something that should prevent anyone from receiving higher learning.

Anyone who is planning on attending college should fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form.  By submitting a FAFSA, you are automatically applying for Pell Grants at the Federal level.  These are awards given to people who qualify according to their financial situation.  There are certain academic requirements, but they are not as strict as many scholarships or grants, as the intent is not to eliminate any suitable students.  One of the best things about getting grants as part of your college student money is that you do not have to pay them back provided you finish your courses.

These will have to be paid back at some point, but the terms are fairly agreeable.  You won’t need to start paying until six months after you graduate and if you do not find a job by that time there are ways to defer payments if you take the right steps.

It is important to talk not only to your high school counsellor but to the financial aid office at the college that you plan to attend.  They may have scholarships that are available to you.  There are also many scholarships that are available for members of certain minorities.  Many of these scholarships have stricter academic requirements, so if you are not already in college you may want to do what you can to pull up your grades.  It may end up paying off for you in many ways.

One of the most important things that you have to remember is to apply on time.  Some awards can be given after the beginning of the school year, but there is a cut-off date for the FAFSA application and you don’t want to miss that.
