College Student Grants Are Your Best Option 

There are a number of different ways that you can pay for college.  If you have a wealthy family or a rich aunt or uncle, that’s probably the best way.  Since few of us have that luxury most people will be looking at loans and college student grants as a way to manage the high cost of getting a college education.  Obviously, between the two of them, getting grants is a better option as you don’t have to pay them back once you graduate. 

There are college student grants available to you have both of Federal and State level.  At the Federal level there are Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Academic Competitiveness Grants and SMART Grants.  The first step is the Pell Grant; in order to be eligible for any of the other Federal college student grants you must qualify for a Pell Grant.  They are need-based and when you apply for the Pell, your expected family contribution will be determined. 

To get college student grants at the Federal level you must apply by using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  This is a requirement for practically all college student grants and therefore it is the most important thing that you can do.  It is also not something that you want to leave to the last minute as it does have a due date.  If you miss out on your grants, you will not be able to apply retroactively. 

College student grants are also available at the state level.  Each state has different awards with different names so you will need to check out your state’s student financial aid website to find out what you should be applying for.  You should also discuss your situation with the financial aid office of the college that you plan to attend. 

There are also college student grants that you may not have considered; if your parents work for a large corporation there may be grants available there.  You may also be eligible to receive college student grants if you are visible minority or for activities that you participated in that range from blogging to community service.  Make sure that you don’t leave any money on the table and apply for any college student grants that you think you have any possibility of getting.
