If you are considering going on to a higher education after completing high school, do not be dissuaded by the fact that it can cost a lot of money. There are ways that you can get help to fund the college education and not only are their loans to assist you, but you may be eligible for Federal and State grants as well.

No matter where you plan to go to school you should make sure that you fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form as soon as possible. This form is the gateway to almost every type of student loan or grant so not completing it would be a big mistake. You can obtain one from your school’s guidance counsellor for financial aid office. You can find them online, but be sure not to pay for it; it has the word free in the title for a reason.

When you fill out this form, you will enter financial information that will determine your eligibility for something like a Pell Grant. They will determine what your expected family contributions will be and if you meet the requirements for financial need you might qualify. You have to be an undergraduate student or working towards a teaching certificate. It is available for both full-time and part-time students, and the amount awarded will depend on the course load.

If you are eligible for a Pell Grant, then you may also be eligible for a College Student Grant Money Academic Competitiveness Grant or a National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant. The former is for freshmen and sophomores, and the latter is for juniors and seniors. Both of these require a fairly high standard of academic excellence, so you won’t necessarily qualify if you have qualified for a Pell Grant.

Beyond these, many individual states also offer grant programs and you should find out from your college which of these you might be eligible for and how to apply. If you are a member of a minority group, there may be grants or scholarships available to you as well. The grants won’t pay for your entire education, but they will certainly ease the burden.
